Maroo is a girl in her dad (Areg)'s tribe, he dies in the middle of the story when he and his brother, Vorka, are hunting for ibex. Vorka breaks his arm trying to kill an ibex. Maroo has to save her family/clan (grandmother (Old Mother), Mom (Tikek), little sister (Nimai), and her uncle (Vorka)) from starvation while her brother (Otak) and her go over a glacier, a mountain, and the pass of the spirits to get to the Autumn Grounds and bring back help. One day Maroo can't find Otak and their dog Rivo so she has to go on alone.
