In 1497, Italian-born John Cabot sailed from England to North America, looking for a northern route to Asia. Accounts vary on where he landed; most likely it was the coast of Newfoundland, Labrador or Cape Breton.

Columbus did not discover America, but Balboa in 1513 leads a party across the Isthmus of Panama and was the first European to see the Pacific. In 1540 De Soto explores the southern tip of the US. John Cabot in 1497 landed in Newfoundland. All of these men and more actually landed and explored North America. Columbus did not.
