From www.rare-cancer.org: Hippocrates is credited with being the first to recognize the difference between benign and malignant tumors. His writings describe cancers of many body sites. The swollen blood vessels around the malignant tumors so reminded him of crab claws, he called the disease karkinos (the Greek name for crab). In English this term translates to carcinos or carcinoma.

The discoverer of Breast cancer is not known. However, the earliest, known description of cancer (the word cancer, not having been used) was found in Egypt, and dates to approximately 1600 B.C. This reference is found in, what is known as, the Edwin Smith Papyrus. It is a copy of part of an ancient Egyptian textbook about trauma surgery. It describes cases of tumors, or ulcers, of the breast. Cauterization was mentioned as the treatment, although apparently, this treatment was not effective.

Malignant neoplasms, commonly known as "cancer", are known since ancient time. This group of diseases were first named "cancer" by Hippocrates, the famous physician of antique Greece (460 BC -370 BC). But, according to an online article in the American Cancer Society web site, the first written reference to cancer is much older than Hippocrates. It is found in a 1,600 BC Egyptian papyrus that describes the surgical treatment of skin "ulcers" and notes that there is no treatment.

In other words, cancer has been around forever. It seems to be an unavoidable consequence of life.

Cancer is not a new disease; its roots stretch back to ancient Egypt and the first documented case of cancer recorded in 1500 B.C. In ancient Greece, the physician known as the "father of medicine", Hippocrates, was the first to name the disease cancer, using the Greek words carcinos and carcinoma to describe tumors. Hippocrates believed cancer was caused by black bile in the body.

Little was known about how the human body worked until autopsies began in the early 17th century, paving the way to a better understanding of human anatomy and physiology. This led to the discovery of the lymphatic system and a new insight into a possible cause of cancer. In the late 19th century Rudolph Virchow's was the doctor to recognize leukemia cells. Virchow's cell theory was expanded on by German surgeon, Karl Thiersch, who discovered that cancer spread through malignant cells.

The 20th century saw the greatest progress in cancer research, with the identification of carcinogens and the discovery of more effective treatments in chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

It is not known, as cancers were obliquely referred to in antiquity. Someone from an old world culture, several thousand years ago, most llikely described a cancer.
