In 1931, Edwin Hubble showed that our Universe was expanding. Since then, scientists have tried to discern whether this expansion would lead to an open universe or a closed one. Over the decades, scientists were surprised at just how close to either possibility our Universe happened to be -- it was like somehow threw a ball onto the top of the Empire State Building, at the ball just happened to land such that it balanced perfectly on the top.
In 1998, observational evidence showed beyond a doubt that the expansion rate of our Universe is increasing over time. Thus, we happen to live in an open universe.
