The discovery of penicillin is credited to Alexander Fleming, a Scottish scientist who famously cultured Penicillium notatum and collected the secretions from the bacteria in 1928.

However, in 1897 a French physician, Ernest Duchesne, studied the interaction between Escherichia coli and Penicillium glaucum (a different strain). He discovered that the Penicillium killed E. coli and also prevented typhoid (Salmonella typhi) in guinea pigs.

Advancements of penicillin for applications as a medicine, were made by Howard Walter Florey, Ernst Chain, and Norman Heatley.
The penicillin was discovered by Alexander Fleming in the year 1928. He discovered it by chance when he was going to show some petri dishes to his former Lab Assistant D. Merlin Pryce.
