There were many scientists who tried to give the proper structure of the atom but none of them was perfect. The atomic structure was developed slowly and step by step from contributions of various scientists.

1. J.J. Thomson was the first one who gave the structure of an atom. He discovered
   the negatively charged electrons. But since atom as a whole was electrically neutral he gave the plum- pudding model which told the electrons were embedded in a positively charged sphere.
2. But his Theory proved to wrong after Rutherford discovered that most of the space in an atom was empty and the mass and positive charge resided in a very small space called as nucleus inside it. He gave the model which told the electrons revolved around the nucleus. But his theory was discarded because a charged particle in circular motion would accelerate and finally the electron would fall in the nucleus and the atom would collapse.
3. Then Niels Bohr, a student of Rutherford told that the electrons revolve around the nucleus in well-defined orbits and do not loose any energy. These orbits were fixed with a certain amount of energy.
4. Finally, Louis De Broglie, Heisenberg and Schrondinger made the final contributions to the atomic structure.
