Maurice Hilleman developed the first effective mumps vaccine in 1963. It was tested and became commercially available in 1967. It was created from live mumps viruses. Before that, starting in 1950, there had been a vaccine made from killed mumps viruses but it was not very effective or long-lasting.

Based on historical accounts, an American pathologist by the name of Ernest William Goodpasture was the one who discovered mumps virus in 1934.Claude D. Johnson and Ernest W. Goodpasture conducted an investigation into the etiology of Mumps and concluded that a virus in saliva caused mumps.
MMR does not treat disease. It is a vaccination given to prevent measles, mumps, and rubella.
