John Winthrop was a founder of the "Massachusetts Bay" colony, and his son, John, helped found Connecticut.
Thomas Hooker founded Hartford. He was a Puritan of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, but started to disagree with some of the Puritans in Massachusetts. He decided to go start a new colony, Connecticut.
Yes, he certainly was. Roger Williams was a devout Protestant Christian, and a minister; but he found the views of the Puritans much too rigid and intolerant, especially when it came to freedom of worship for other religious groups. He also believed it was unfair to take land from the native peoples (then called Indians). In 1636, he was expelled from Massachusetts, and he soon became the founder of Rhode Island, a place where other dissenters (including non-Christians) could live and worship freely.
Rhode Island is where the religious dissenter went. The Puritans were not big fans of religious tolerance. In fact Roger Williams the founder of Rhode Island fled his home in the middle of a cold January night in order to avoid arrest for his religious views. The Puritans "shining City on a Hill" was not for people who did not agree with them.
