Roger Williams was a devout Protestant Christian, and a minister; but he found the views of the Puritans much too rigid and intolerant, especially when it came to freedom of worship for other religious groups. He also believed it was unfair to take land from the native peoples (then called Indians). In 1636, he was expelled from Massachusetts, and he soon became the founder of Rhode Island, a place where other dissenters (including non-Christians) could live and worship freely.
