There were quite a few people that refused to accept King Henry VIII's divorce from Queen Catherine of Aragon.

Among the most notable were Cardinal Campeggio and Pope Clement VII at the time, who caused quite a delay in the separation.

Thomas Cranmer eventually became archbishop under King Henry's rule and declared the marriage invalid (just in time for Anne Boleyn and King Henry to be married and conceive a child).

King Henry was later excommunicated from the church. Thereby establishing himself as the head of the Church of England - still in place to this day.

He basically sent a giant letter with many seals of other lords requesting the annulment (not divorce). But the Pope refused because it was a true marriage. Henry then formed his own church where he was to be the head and could change anything he wanted. With that, he divorced Catherine. That formed the Anglican Church.

.

Catholic AnswerHenry VIII had to ask the Pope for an Annulment because there is no such thing as divorce in the Catholic Church, and King Henry VIII was a Catholic, and fancied himself a pretty good one at that. His only chance at procuring a new wife was to have his first marriage annulled: declared invalid, which would have left him free to marry again.

It was Archbishop Thomas Cranmer who granted Henry VIII's divorce to Catherine of Aragon, who had joined the King's Court to accomplish this.
