The humans who cry most often and are most associated with crying are babies. When a baby cries, they receive attention from someone who takes on a parental role. So it's probable that humans later in life cry to initiate a parental response in someone else. If you're injured (emotionally or physically), you need someone to help you.
Another hypothesis states that you produce certain hormones and chemicals when crying for emotional reasons. The composition of tears in a person who is physically injured is different from the tears of someone who cries emotionally. The brain responds to emotional stress by producing certain compounds in excess, and tears are found to contain these chemicals to rid them from the body.
