During a section of the FFVII storyline, Cloud Strife was possessed by Jenova. He did not so much steal an identity as he mistakenly thought he was someone else. He claimed the ID of his best friend, Zack Fair. They worked at Shinra together.

∙ 8y agoCloud steals Zack's identity on accident due to mako poisoning. He watches Zack keep him alive, listens to Zack and watches Zack die in front of him. This, during the effects of mako poisoning, shaped his mind to a pseudo-amnesia-like state where he forgot a lot of his own past and remembered a lot of what Zack did. By the time he wandered to Midgar, he thought he had done the things that Zack did. It also didn't help that Tifa did not tell him that he was remembering things wrong, but instead allowed him to act like this by lying to him a little bit in hopes that he would snap out of it.
Makou poisoning can kill a person, Cloud was very lucky that Zack was there to help him.
