IN a publicly held corporation, the CEO is generally selected by the Board of Directors, and the Board is generally elected by stockholders of the company. In a privately owned company, the CEO is selected by the owner(s) of the company. In governmental organizations, the selection process is defined in the law that constituted the organization. For the United States of America, the process is defined in the Constitution.
