This year's recipient, George Clooney, is the fourth person to receive the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award. The award was inaugurated in 2002, with Oprah Winfrey as the first honoree. Bill Cosby was honored in 2003 and Marlo Thomas accepted the award posthumously for her father, Danny Thomas, in 2004. It is not necessarily an annual award, and is only conferred when the Hope Humanitarian Selection Committee (composed of Academy members) and a representative of the Bob and Dolores Hope Charitable Foundation deem fit. This is the first time the award has been given since 2004.

The Bob Hope Humanitarian Award honors an individual in the television industry who has come to the fore in humanitarian actions, and whose deeds have a lasting impact on society. Hope's contributions to charities and his numerous USO trips to entertain members of the service, both at home and abroad, have been an example to others in the industry of the role TV celebrities can play in bettering the world. George Clooney has actively used television to raise money for those in need, whether it be victims of the 9-11, the 2005 tsunami or the Gulf Coast's Hurricane Katrina. He has worked to focus global attention on preventing mass atrocities -- starting with Darfur -- through the organization he founded with Matt Damon, Brad Pitt, Don Cheadle and Jerry Weintraub, Not on Our Watch.
