On President Franklin D. Roosevelt's recommendation, the US Congress declared war on Japan on December 8, 1941, following the Japanese attack on the US fleet at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Because of their treaty with Japan, Germany declared war on the US on December 11.

The US had been directly and indirectly aiding Britain and Russia (against Germany) and China (against Japan).
