The Spanish explored and conquered large areas of the Americas because they had advanced weaponry over the indigenous people. Additionally, they brought over diseases with them that decimated 90 percent of the people living in the Americas. That made it easier for the Spanish to take over more territory.
Upon the realization that the Americas were a New World, the Spanish set about establishing colonies and looting the gold and other valuables accumulated by native tribes. They explored Central America and conquered the Aztecs in Mexico, and established churches and vast land holdings in California.
Spain/Early Spanish explorers had a lot of accomplishments. They explored most of the Americas, parts of Africa, and colonized ALL of South America except Brazil. The Spanish also explored Florida and was later bought by the English for only six million dollars, but it was a lot of money back then.
