South east Asia first brought Islam to Indonesia
Ghana's Kings did not practice both religions at the same time. They first practiced local traditional religions and when Islam arrived in Ghana, they converted to Islam, but kept some distinctive touches from their traditional religions. They did not start as Muslims since Islam had not reached them yet. They converted to Islam because they were convinced it was correct. They kept small touches of their original religion out of loyalty to their history, culture, and those Ghanians who had not converted to Islam.
Muslims in Ghana are minority while in Mali they are majority. In Ghana percentage of Muslims is only 15.9 % (~3.8 million Muslims) while in Mali the percentage is 92.5% (~12 million Muslims). These statistics are according to Pew Forum study as of October 2009. Chrissy: The people of Ghana were forced to convert to Islam by the muslims empire in Ghana. The Muslims came to Ghana from North America and built mosques. In time, Ghana's ruler employed them as advisers. As Ghana grew weaker, Mali replaced Ghana and taken over most of their territory. Mali's first great ruler, Sundiata, came into power by crushing a cruel, unpopular leader. In Mali, their ruler did NOT force his people to convert/or accept Islam. In fact, most of the people of Mali retained their traditional African beliefs.
there are three reasons why the empire of Ghana fell the first reason is that the Almoravid attacked Ghana the second reason is when the Almoravid moved into Ghana the brought animals with them the animal ate all the grass leaving the soil exposed to the hot sun. the third reason is that some rebels rose up and took over all of Ghana.

Islam first reached Ghana through Muslim traders & missionaries. The king of Ghana did not convert to Islam. Nor did the majority of the people. But the king did not allow Muslims to build settlements within his empire. this is written in the 7th grade history book p.156 paragraph 3 Islam first reached Gahna by Muslims traders and missionaries. Nor the king or the majority of people convert to Islam, but the king did'nt allow Muslims to construct within his empire. this is the way i changed it a little. -marlenne l. :)
The Portuguese arrived in Ghana in 1471, although there are no records on the web for it, one may safely assume that the Portuguese brought priests with them, who would have been the first missionaries.
