Between 1540 and 1542, Francisco Coronado explored what is now the US Southwest. He traveled through north central Mexico, into what is now Arizona, New Mexico, northeast Texas, the Oklahoma panhandle, and possibly as far as Kansas. He did not find the riches he was seeking, and Coronado returned to Mexico after suffering injuries in a fall from his horse.
