It is not known with precision. There is evidence of human presence in the area which goes back to 14,000 years ago, that is around 12,000 BC.

Rome was said to have been founded in 753 BC. The founding of Rome does not refer to the building of the city. It refers to the creation the Roman state. Romulus did not build Rome. Romulus unified the peoples who lived on the settlements of the hills which were to become the Seven Hills of Rome under his rule. Collectively, these settlements became Rome. Romulus was the first king of Rome as well as the founder of the city.

According to legend, Rome was founded by Romulus in 753 BC, but it had been settled for a long time at that point. The area of Rome had been inhabited for about ten thousand years, and we have no idea who the first settlers were.

The foundation of Rome does not refer to settling in one place and building a city. It refers to the creation the Roman state. Romulus, the founder of Rome and its first king, unified the peoples who lived in separate settlements on the hills which were to become the Seven Hills of Rome (the Palatine, Capitoline, Caelian, Esquiline, Viminal, Quirinal and Aventine hills) under his rule. Collectively, these settlements became Rome. It was also said that the foundation of Rome involved a fusion between Latins and Sabines. The earliest evidence of human settlement in the area of Rome dates to the 14thor 13th century BC, some 700-600 before the given date of the foundation of Rome in 753 BC.

As Rome expanded and created a vast empire many Romans moved to Roman colonies (settlements) dotted around the empire
