The phrase is in the Roman Ritual for communion and was expressed in the Latin- Corpus Christi- the Body of Christ- in reference to His presence in the sacrament. the repsonse or countersign was usually Amen. there was always some wag in Sunday school who suggested it should be- Texas! The use of the phrase to mean the (body) of believers is much more recent. it is not normally used in this sense in the Catholic Church- it means the presence in the Communion wafer- and of course the Mystical Body of Christ- no anything like, say the ( Student Body) , say of a school.
