Nixon was not the first president to lie to us (if he lied), but the social fabric of our nation had changed, and we were in the mood to question authority.

When the Breakin at the watergate hotel happened, it was assumed that he was involved. Also, he taped conversations, but he erased minutes from the tapes, etc. So, he stepped down. Likely for the good of the nation, since the nation was too involved in that nonsense and it was taking away from government affairs.
