A Roman army led by Publius Cornelius Scipio defeated the Carthagian army led by Hannibal (who had been recalled with his army from Italy to defend Carthage) on the plain of Zama in 202 BCE. Carthage surrendered and this ended the Second Punic War.

Rome imposed a massive indemnity to be paid off in annual installments, designed to cripple Carthage for 50 years. The Carthagininas were such outstanding traders that they managed to pay it off in ten years, and this raised fears in Rome of another Hannibal invasion. They eventually had Hannibal disposed of and opened the Third Punic War, destroying Carthage completely and enslaving the population in 146 BCE.
