Who gaston in Beauty and the Beast?

Gaston was the handsomest man in the village where Belle lived. He was the object of every girl's affections but only had eyes for Belle who, by chance, was the only woman uninterested.

Later in the story he is the one who blackmails Belle into marrying him by threatening to lock her father away in an insane asylum. However, after he learns of the Beast, he leads a party down to the castle in an attempt to raid it and kill the Beast.

During the fight, combat breaks out between the Beast and Gaston. While the Beast is distracted, he stabs him and nearly kills him. However, the Beast manages to swipe Gaston off the roof, causing him to fall.

In some stories, they say Gaston died from the fall. In others, they say he lived on, and in some, they simply say he fell.
