Proud of his products, he prominently displayed his name "Amerigo" on each map he made. His map of the New World had his name on it, too. Since the New World didn't have a name yet (after it was finally determined that it wasn't India after all!) some loosely started calling the New World "Amerigo" after the name on the map, which eventually became "America". That is the most widely accepted theory.
