All the Central Powers, who lost World War I, were punished by the Treaty of Versailles. All four countries (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, and the Ottoman Empire) had separate treaties. Germany's was by far most severe.
Germany's Treaty of Versailles was the most important. It listed that Germany must admit World War I was their fault and they must pay the Allied countries' governments for the damage they've caused. They also had to forfeit all land they acquired during the war as well as their colonies. They had to reduce their army to 100,000 men, cut back their navy, and eliminate their air force. This treaty was very harsh because the French and British wanted revenge on Germany, for this great war among other things.
Germany were punished by the Treaty of Versailles.
Other countries were also punished after World War I, seperately from the Treaty of Versailles.
Austria signed the Treaty of Saint Germain.
Hungary signed the Treaty of Trianon.
Bulgaria signed the Treaty of Neuilly.
The Turkish Empire signed the Treaty of Sevres.
Hope that helps. ;)
The Treaty of Versailles wasn't intended to punish anybody - it was simply the peace agreement between the Allies and the Germans. However the Germans were hardly involved in the negotiations and the Treaty was very harsh against them; arguably leading to the inflation and ensuing poverty that, in it's turn, lead to Hitler's rise to power and WW2.
No. It was designed to punish Germany .
The United States rejected the Treaty of Versailles because they did not want to punish Germany that harshly. The U.S. felt that the treaty was punishing Germany the wrong way and felt that Germany would respond back. The treaty was made in a way that Germany would have no choice but to fight the treaty and that is a major reason for World War 2. By the U.S. not signing the treaty, they were not immediately involved in World War 2.
The Versailles Treaty created peace only because it ended the fighting. All it did was punish Germany for its part in the war.
It was considered to be a complete failure do to the fact that in a sense it led to WWII. Germany had to pay a lot of reparations and felt harshly treated. France wanted it treated harder while Britain tried to convince France and the USA to punish Germany not too harshly but not to softly. The USA wanted Germany to be punished very little if at all. Also the USA did not ratify the Treaty or in other words agree to it.

To punish the Germans for World War 1

harshly
The provinces of Alsace and Lorraine were returned to France following World War I. It was done as part of the Treaty of Versailles in order to punish Germany.
There is much that people today can learn from the long term results of the Treaty of Versailles. Specifically, it is that people should not severely punish the losing side following a war. They should make the terms of any treaty fair and moderate to all concerned.
France did not punish Germany with the treaty. The Treaty of Versailles was the punishment France and other countries doled out on Germany. It was an unfair treatment in the long run. They failed to see the real reason for the start of the war was the fault of the Austrian and Hungarian people not the Germans.
No, the Treaty of Versailles was not effective. In fact it was counterproductive Instead of making another European war impossible, it practically made WW2 inevitable. The treaty was designed to punish and weaken Germany. It succeeded in causing great economic dislocation and bitterness in Germany, without which the Nazis would likely not have managed to seize power.
