Rhode Island was created by dissenters who challenged the rigidity of the Puritan religion. They believed in a separation between Church and State, whereas the Puritans believed in running the state through the Church. Settlers needed to be tolerant of other religions, this was a key principle of the colony.

Origin of the Name Rhode Island - Rhode Island was either named for the Isle of Rhodes (in the Mediterranean Sea) or for its red clay (the Dutch explorer Adriaen Block may have named it "Rood Eylandt" meaning Red Island, in Dutch).
