The impact that the Civil War had on the North and the South was: North: * North abolished slavery after the war because of the Emancipation Proclamation South * South grew poor * South experienced inflation
North: Better railroads More people from which to draw troops Better and more industry A standing navy South: Better Generalship Better infantry soldiers Better cavalry Fighting on home soil
The North had to do the invading. The South was mostly fighting on home ground, with which they were more familiar, and where local civilians were able to help. The North was industrialised, and able to manufacture all manner of war supplies. The South was agricultural and had to improvise its war production. The North was free to import and export throughout the war. The South was increasingly blockaded. The North had little experience of cavalry. The South had a strong cavalry tradition, with most young men owning several horses. The North were fighting reluctantly, out of duty. The South were the kind of people who actively relished a fight. The North had the most talented President America has ever known. The South had a President who was badly out of his depth, both in military and political affairs.
Weakness in cavalry. The burden of having to do the invading. Threat of Britain and France helping the South. A bad conscription law, encouraging bounty-jumping.
Building a large army from scratch. The job of doing the invading. Absence of a strong cavalry tradition. Blockading hundreds of miles of Confederate coastline. Risk of Britain and France sending military aid to the South. Prospect of a General Election in 1864 - losing it would lose the war.
On July 3, 1863, a large scale cavalry battle between the South and the North took place on Cress Ridge. This was about four miles from the main battle at Gettysburg.
