After the Confederate capture of Fort Sumter, it became a frequent target of Union attempts to "pay back" the South for its takeover of Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor. Perhaps no fort in the US Civil War endured the pressures of being a gateway to the South. By the time the Union was serious about retaking the fort, the Rebels had greatly strengthened the fort that protected Charleston and its harbor. More cannons were added to the fort and all points within the harbor had allot of artillery and fortifications. For example, when on April 7, 1863, Union warships steamed into the harbor where they passed a number of buoys which the Rebels used as range markers for their artillery. Once the US flotilla was in range the Confederates, with great accuracy fired over 2,000 shots in the two hour battle that ensued. The Union ships managed to return fire with only 154 shots. This was one episode in the Union's attempt to take over Fort Sumter and the harbor. More agtempts would be tried again.
