It was Roman Catholics who settled in the area that King Charles I had given to George Calvert. Charles I of England lived from 1600 to 1649.
George Calvert was granted lordship there. This area is Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. He also brought along hundreds of his servants. He was granted a dispensation to practice and spread Catholicism around the area. I hope I answered thoroughly enough.

In 1632 Calvert died and five weeks later the Charter for Mayland was granted to his son Cecil Calvert the 2nd Lord Baltimore. Ships, supplies and colonists saliled for the New World in 1933 under the leadership of Governor Leonard Calvert, via Barbados and Jamestown and arrived in Maryland on 25 March 1634.

The Jamestown colony
The Calvert family was given a charter to start the colony in 1632 by the British King of the time (I think it as King George II, but don't quote me on that). Maryland was a proprietary colony meaning that the king would give then a charter and land in exchange for running the colony in the name of the motherland, Britain. However, Protestants formed a majority and the manors evolved into plantations. The colonists landed first on an island in the Chesapeake Bay which they named St. Clement's (now Blakistone) Island on March 25, 1634.Maryland began as a colony when King Charles 1 promised George Calvert , the first Lord Baltimore, a colony north of Virginia.
