The Calvert family was given a charter to start the colony in 1632 by the British King of the time (I think it as King George II, but don't quote me on that). Maryland was a proprietary colony meaning that the king would give then a charter and land in exchange for running the colony in the name of the motherland, Britain. So the first leader was the Calvet Family.
Thomas Johnson (not Jefferson) was the first governor of Maryland under the United States of America.
