∙ 9y agoThere is a formation known as a subduction zone off Alaska's southern coast. Here the Pacific plate slides into and under the North American Plate. Subduction zones are major earthquake producers and can produce larger earthquakes than those found at transform boundaries such as Califnornia's San Andreas Fault. The subduction zone has also led to the formation of volcanoes in Alaska, which can produce earthquakes. The segment of plate boundary off the coast of Alaska is about 2,500 miles long, compared with about 900 miles for the plate boundary running through and near California, giving more opportunity for earthquakes to occur.

∙ 10y agoThe Pacific plate is moving northward towards Alaska. It is subducting under Alaska and the Aleutian Islands as well as the easternmost end of Siberia (which is on the North American plate). This subduction causes earthquakes as well as volcanoes.
Alaska has on average 2-3 times more earthquakes than California. Alaska accounts for over 57% of all eathquakes in the United States.

∙ 10y agoAlaska has over 3x more earthquakes than California. The number of earthquakes in Alaska is actually under reported, even though Alaska already accounts for more than 50 percent of all US earthquakes.
There are a few other reasons why people think California has the most earthquakes in the US. California is more densely populated the damage to buildings and people is much greater. It also gets both more press time and coverage in big Hollywood disaster movies.
