Changing gears a bit, and looking back to the 19th and 20th centuries, few would dispute that the British empire was the biggest one in history. It's size is amplified by the fact its empire included the subcontinent of India.
The case of the "Soviet empire" this writer excludes in that its existence was for a short time. Also, the full extent of Russia, including Siberia, is excluded in that Siberia was part of Russia and later, part of the Soviet empire.
