In the New Testament an "Elder" was classed as the same as a "Pastor". Sometimes they are referred to as Bishops or Overseers. They were the leaders in the church. Does a Nigerian naming ceremony have to be in a church?

no, but alot of them are. overall though a Nigerian naming ceremony can be in a church(or mosque if the family is Muslim), family house, hall, and etc. However it's required that a pastor(or a imam), and elder or elder representative of the family present in the naming ceremony because some parts of the ceremony has to be done by the pastor (or imam). Beside's that it's a small intimate ceremony celebrated with family and friends, food, freshments, music and etc.

Who conducts a church service?

Who conducts a church service? Well I believe that a Resident Pastor or Bishop of that church is qualified to conduct a service for the church. On occasion when the Pastor or Bishop are not around to minister, the elders can take control of the ministering and the conduction of the service in the morning and afternoon {If applicable}. Primarily it is either the Pastor or the Bishop. In the event of a church having Deacons instead of elder- they are not allowed to preach or conduct a service simply because Deacons (1st Tim 3:10) are only servants in the church whereas elders (1st Tim 3:2) are teachers or preachers. I hope this answers the question!

Why is the pulpit doctrinally important in the Presbyterian church?

This is getting into the fine points a bit.... But One major purpose of the church is to enable a Teaching Elder (pastor) to expound the Word of God (the Bible) to the congregation. The members of the congregation listen attentively and, enabled by the Holy Spirit, apply the truths of God's Word to their lives. Thus, the sermon is of especial importance to the service and to the church, and this importance is highlighted by the presence of the pulpit. The pulpit, as well as the Geneva gown worn by the pastor, also hides what the pastor is wearing from the congregation so that they won't be distracted by noticing what the pastor is wearing.

Do you have to attend a Lutheran seminary to become a Lutheran minister?

No you do not. The Pastor at my church was actually a Baptist Minister before he came to our church and he did not study at a Lutheran seminary. In Australia, the answer is yea. There are only two ways in which can become a Lutheran pastor: 1. Attend a Lutheran seminary 2. For an elder (or other established Lutheran parish member) to go through an alternative accredited programme externally via the Lutheran seminary, in order to serve in his home church.
