A Brigadier General Rains of the Confederate army had troops to prepare artillery shells with trip wires. On May 4 1862 the first man , a horse rider, was killed by a pressure operated landmine. From 1862-63 Rains mines were in wide use by the Confederate army. As a side note in 1960 5 of his mines were found and were still "very dangerous."
