Confederate soldiers were headed to Gettysburg Pennsylvania seeking shoes. Inadvertently they encountered Union soldiers. This was the inception of the Battle of Gettysburg.
Short answer: The Confederate army went into Gettysburg looking for shoes.
The Confederates had heard that there was a store house of shoes... located in gettsburg... So they decided to go there to find them
Confederate Major General JEB Stuart was looking forward to day three at the US Civil War Battle of Gettysburg. He had been admonished by his commander, Robert E. Lee for hampering Lee's operations on the first two days of the battle. Stuart arrived late and Lee could not use, as planned, Stuart's cavalry to scout out Union positions. Stuart's main mission on the last day of the Battle of Gettysburg was on East Cavalry Hill and were intended to be coordinated with Pickett's charge against the Union center.
Gettysburg is only about ten miles north of the southern border of Pennsylvania, and maybe fifty miles across Maryland from the nearest point in Virginia as the crow flies. The Confederates had a much longer way to go though, on the campaign which led them to Gettysburg. When they set out for Pennsylvania the Confederates left their camps at Chancellorsville, just west of Fredericksburg, Virginia. This was about sixty miles south of Washington DC, and maybe 125 miles on a straight line from Gettysburg. The Confederates did not proceed on a straight course to Gettysburg, however. They first moved northwest, crossing the Bull Run Mountains into the Shenandoah Valley, then northeast down the Valley to the Potomac at Harper's Ferry and vicinity. Some Confederates were already in Pennsylvania before the last of them left their camps near Fredericksburg. Once in Pennsylvania the Confederates were considerably spread out. Lee's Army contained three corps, and the Second Corps was on the west bank of the Susquehanna River looking across at the state capital, Harrisburg, when the battle of Gettysburg began. Thus, the Second Corps marched south and arrived at the battle from the north, to the great surprise of the Union forces. The other Confederates had come to Gettysburg from the west, along the route of present US Highway 30, from Cashtown, then known as the Cashtown Pike.
Before Gettysbrg, they were revelling in their brilliant victory at Chancellorsville, darkened only by the death of Stonewall, and they were looking to raid the prosperous state of Pennsylvania for farm produce and many war supplies. This period has been known ever since as the Confederate High Watermark. After their defeat at Gettysburg, compounded by news of the liberation of the Mississippi, they could only straggle back to Virginia, where they would be in no state to conduct major campaigns for many months. It was a devastating psychological blow to the Confederates, from which they never recovered. It was also from this time that Lee's health began to decline, perhaps psychosomatic.
