When Francis was young he lived a pretty wild life - wine, women and song. Then he decided to become a knight and join the battle against a neighboring town. He was taken prisoner and thrown into prison. While in prison he received a message from God to, basically, "Get you life together, clean up your act and rebuild My Church." Once released from prison he became a wandering hermit-preacher and gradually gather a group of followers who eventually became the foundation for the Franciscan order. He was disowned by his wealthy father for this.

Saint Francis of Assisi was influenced by his personal spiritual experiences, particularly a vision he had of Jesus Christ calling him to rebuild the Church. He also drew inspiration from the teachings of Jesus in The Bible, especially those related to caring for the poor and living a humble, charitable life. Additionally, the examples of other early Christian saints and ascetics, such as Saint Anthony of Egypt, may have influenced his commitment to serving others.
