As Lincoln was subject to more than one scandal up to and including his efforts to remove freed slaves from the States (he made several disastrous attempts to remove them to colonies), it is hard to pinpoint a time in his life when 'Honest Abe' ever made the turning point to becoming "honest and good". He was a good president, evidently, but he also earned much animosity for self-serving and Machiavellian actions.
