It is not known who invented the air balloon (or toy balloon). The earliest such balloon was fashioned from animal stomachs, intestines and bladders. However, it is known that Galileo (1564-1642) inflated a pig's bladder to try and determine the weight of air.
Officially, the hot air balloon was invented in December 1782 by the Montgolfier brothers, the maiden flight occurring in November 1783. However, unmanned hot air balloons were used by the Chinese around 220-280CE. They were known as Kongming lanterns and were used for signalling. There is also some speculation that Nazca cultures were using manned, tethered hot air balloons as an aid to designing Nazca ground lines and figures up to 2000 years ago.
