The first police force was created in ancient Rome. The first use of science to solve a crime occured in a small Asian village about 800 years ago. A man was killed with a shovel. An individual investigating asked all the men in the village to bring their shovels to the town square and hold them spade up. When flies arrived at one shovel, looking for traces of blood and brain matter, the investigator found his suspect and modern forensics was born. Forensics was later advanced when a French police inspector discovered that no two individuals share the same fingerprints.

Forensics as a scientific discipline was developed by Edmond Locard in the early 20th century. Locard's Exchange Principle states that every contact leaves a trace, which laid the foundation for modern forensic science.
