∙ 12y agoI believe that the Etruscans invented it and the Romans improved upon it. Well the Romans certainly improved it, but gladiatorial fighting is credited with being "invented" in the southern Italian district known as Campania. They were originally held to celebrate the southern peoples victory over the Samnites.

∙ 12y agoNo, the Romans did not invent gladiator fighting although the gladiators seem to be firmly connected to ancient Rome. Gladiatorial fighting is a very ancient custom, believed to have been initiated in a town in Campania (an area of Italy) to commemorate a victory in war. It did not drift up to Rome until 246 BC. However the Romans , being the Romans, improved the sport, adopted strict rules, and professionalized it.

∙ 13y agoThe historian Livy tells us that the first known gladiatorial fights were in the Italian area of Campania, celebrating the victory of the Campanians over the Samnites. This was in 310 BC. The first gladiatorial bout in Rome, however, were not until 246 BC. This was put on by Marcus and Decius Brutus (no, not the ones associated with Caesar) as a munus or funeral gift to their father, Junius. There were three pairs of slaves and they fought in the Forum Boarium, the cattle market.
