Some people say it was the Earl of Sandwich. He liked to play cards all the time and did not want to stop for meals, so he had his servants serve him his food between two slices of bread. This is now probably the most popular portable meal in the West.

In the 1700's John Montagu, the Earl of Sandwich (a place in England) was playing cards and didn't want to have to stop to eat a proper meal, so he had a servant bring him a piece of roast beef between two slices of bread. Thus was the sandwich born.

In the comic strip, "Blondie", which originated in the 1930's, one of the characters "created" the Dagwood sandwich. The strip character, Dagwood Bumstead, would pile whatever he could find in the kitchen on bread, making a huge sandwich. Thus the term Dagwood sandwich became a household term, and people still call a sandwich made with many various ingredients a "Dagwood Sandwich."

How much roast beef for roast beef sandwiches for 20 people?

If you figure roughly 2 sandwiches per person... And each sandwich is 1/4 the size of a regular sandwich... That works out to 25 whole sandwiches cut into quarters. So the real question becomes how much roast beef do you need to make 25 sandwiches? I figure 1/10 of a pound of roast beef per sandwich should be adequate. So that means you'll need about 2.5 pounds. A full sandwich before cutting would be 4/10 of a pound of roast beef which is almost a half pound, so I think 1/10 of a pound would work nicely. And to be on the safe side, I'd make 60-65 mini sandwiches just to be sure.
