I assume you mean the Antikythera device, which is NOT a Theodolite as some have called it. The Greeks and Greco-Egyptians had something like a very primitive form of Pelorus and compass used primarily as both a surveying instrument and/or a weapons sight. The latter us was shown in both versions of the Movie Cleopatra- the l934 and the Modern ( Elizabeth Taylor) versions. That woke you up. this device was called the Dioptra and was popularized by Hero of Alexandria- Greco-Egyptian savant who came up with such things as steam turbines , fountains , vending machines for water coolers, and so on. We don"t know if he had a hand on the Antikythera device which was discovered in a fragmented ( had been recovered from a shipwreck) form between l900 and l902 ( dates vary).. The possibility exists the Antikythera device may have been made much later- as late as maybe the nineteenth century, as a sort of astronomical clock that used Greek Notation. Just happened to fall into the wreckage over the years. You find a Civil War coin in an auto in a junk yard- does that make the Car a relic of say, Mannassas?- heck no! Food for thought.

When was the first analog computer invented?

The Antikythera mechanism is believed to be the earliest known mechanical analog "computer" by Derek J. de Solla Price. It was designed to calculate astronomical positions. It was discovered in 1901 in the Antikythera wreck off the Greek island of Antikythera, between Kythera and Crete, and has been dated to circa 100 BC. Devices of a level of complexity comparable to that of the Antikythera mechanism would not reappear until a thousand years later.

What was the first non-electronic computer?

It was Professor John Vincent Atansoff. He developed it in 1939. It was invented in the Iowa State University.

Who invented the first analog computers?

The first known analog computer is the antikythera mechanism. It was found underwater in 1900. It is believed to have been made prior to 100BC. Inventor unknown.

Was the antikythera mechanism really the first computer?

it was an astronomical calculator. A form of mechanical analog computer. The nordon bombsight was also a form of mechanical analog computer.

What year was the first computer developed?

The first analog computer invented was the Antikythera Mechanism, about 2000 years ago. One sample was found in an ancient shipwreck about 1910. It was designed to calculate astronomical positions for navigation. The first digital computer invented was the Analytical Engine, about 200 years ago. It was never built. It was entirely mechanical and intended to be powered by a steam engine. It was fully programable and general purpose with an architecture very much like modern electronic digital computers.

Is the island of crete between the great and mediterranean seas?

Between Greece and Crete there lie the islands of Kythera and Antikythera. In Ancient Greece Kythera was considered the island of Aphrodite, the goddess of love. Quite close south west of Kythera is the Calypso Deep, lying in the Ionian Sea, the deepest point of the Mediterranean Sea (5,267 meters). The small island of Antikythera is well known for the ancient ship wreck that was found there in 1902, unveiling the Antikythera Mechanism. Kythera and Antikythera also form the borderline between the Ionian Sea and the Aegean Sea. More information on the certain areas can be found via the Related Links.

How old is the first computer?

Off the coast of the Greek island of Antikythera, sponge diver Elias Stadiatus was lowered into the sea in his bulky diving suit. When he reached the bottom, his eyes widened The Antikythera Mechanism lay under the sea for about 2,000 years, the answer was hidden behind thick mineral deposits.

What is the Antikythera Mechanism and when was it found?

The Antikythera mechanism is a geared mechanism, believed to have been made by the ancient Greeks, made from bronze in a wooden frame. It was found on 17 May 1902 by archaeologist Spyridon Stais, who was working a shipwreck that had been discovered about 40 metres deep off the Greek island of Antikythera in 1900. Since its discovery, scientists have only been able to theorise over its purpose, as no documentation appears to exist regarding this ancient mechanism. The most widey accepted theory concerning its function is that it was an analog computer designed to model the movements of heavenly objects. Recent working reconstructions of the device support this analysis. The device is all the more impressive for its use of a differential gear, which was previously believed to have only been invented in the 16th century

What did the antikythera device do?

It is a mechanical/analog ancient Greek computer/calculator which is used to calculate astronomical positions of the Sun, moon, and other planets.
