The CA flag is from the Bear Republic Flag in 1846 created by John C. Fremont when he took Ca from the Mexican government. The story goes he had a young girl sew it and the red edge came from her slip. The bear is used because they were all through the state. The official flag was created in 1911 using a picture of the last wild grizzly bear in captivity as a model. Then, in 1953 the flag was standardized.
