The Chinese invented a numeral system using bamboo rods. There were five rods in a set and they laid them out on a board or on the ground, placing them in various positions to form the nine numbers. The originator of this system is not know, but the Chinese were using it as early as 475 BC.

In fact, they came up only with the written symbols, says acclaimed academic Lam Lay Yong, who believes the Chinese invented the numeral system and were adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing at least 1,000 years before anyone else, with simple bamboo rods.
