In World War Two they had blackouts because they didn't want aeroplanes to spot the light in the windows to know that they were there. Therefore they covered the windows with wood and other parts of the house that showed light out side, to stop themselves from giving them away.
Blackouts were the ongoing restrictions upon lights in major cities. The purpose being to deny enemy bomber aircraft a major navigational aid (a single lightbulb can be seen from thousands of feet away at night, from the air) In the US, the blackouts were only reluctantly established after German submarines began sinking ships on a nightly basis within sight of the US coast. They correctly believed that the Germans were finding the ships by staying off shore and looking for their Silhouettes against the brightly lit coastal cities. The introduction of blackouts did not stop the attacks against ships off the US coast, but reduced the weekly tonnage sunk noticeably.
It began so that night flights of enemy aircraft were unable to pin point targets, which would be very visible without a blackout.
It's when a city would turn off most or all of its lights at night as a means of defense during a nighttime air raid.

you would get bombed
for blackout purposes. to insure light could not be seen by aircrat flying over a target......
you would certainly be fined, in some countries arrested and on several very rare occasions executed.
The Americans.

The Blackout. I am doing a World War 2 project for school. The Blackout in World War 2 started on the 1st of September 1939, 2 days after the outbreak of the war. (WWII) I am still not sure when the Blackout ended. Good Luck with that, thingymabobSeptenber 1, 1939-September 2, 1945
1945
ok the blackout was when everyone put all the lights out and everything to stop the Germans seeing them
the reason people painted their cows black in world war 2 was because during the blackout, you had to hide your cows. moo the reason people painted their cows black in world war 2 was because during the blackout, you had to hide your cows. moo the reason people painted their cows black in world war 2 was because during the blackout, you had to hide your cows. moo

it was 50 thousand
You needed a ''Blackout'' because, if everyone had their lights on during a bombing raid then it would be easy for the bombers to spot you!
4 years definitely I learnt it in History !

would'nt anyone think a blackout was a nuisance?
They were done routinely any time there was an air raid to help hide the targets.
Orders were given for blackouts from the outset of the war in Sep 1939, in fear of German bombing raids.
