In World War Two they had blackouts because they didn't want aeroplanes to spot the light in the windows to know that they were there. Therefore they covered the windows with wood and other parts of the house that showed light out side, to stop themselves from giving them away.

Blackouts were the ongoing restrictions upon lights in major cities. The purpose being to deny enemy bomber aircraft a major navigational aid (a single lightbulb can be seen from thousands of feet away at night, from the air) In the US, the blackouts were only reluctantly established after German submarines began sinking ships on a nightly basis within sight of the US coast. They correctly believed that the Germans were finding the ships by staying off shore and looking for their Silhouettes against the brightly lit coastal cities. The introduction of blackouts did not stop the attacks against ships off the US coast, but reduced the weekly tonnage sunk noticeably.

It began so that night flights of enemy aircraft were unable to pin point targets, which would be very visible without a blackout.

It's when a city would turn off most or all of its lights at night as a means of defense during a nighttime air raid.
