Although it is popularly believed that the German army was the first to use gas it was in fact initially deployed by the French. In the first month of the war, August 1914, they fired tear-gas grenades (xylyl bromide) against the Germans. Nevertheless the German army was the first to give serious study to the development of chemical weapons and the first to use it on a large scale.

Answer:

The first safe grenade for a person to throw was the Mills bomb, invented by Englishmen, William Mills in 1915. The bomb had a spring-loaded firing-pin and a spring-loaded lever witch was looked in place by a pin, once the Mills Bomb was in the air a lever would lift and release a striker which, would ignite a four-second time fuse which would let the thrower of the grenade to take cover before the grenade exploded. When the grenade blew-up it would shatter producing a shower of metal fragments. The grenade developed by Mills soon became very popular with British soldiers and remained in supply until the end of 1916.

The grenade is a product of the Middle Ages, hence the exact inventor is unknown. However, incendiary grenades using "Greek Fire" (a substance with an effect similar to napalm) were used by the Byzantine Empire, and the Chinese used gunpowder grenades starting in the 1100s.
