Karl Benz invented first petrol engine in 1885. Considered the inventor of the modern day motor car.
In 1885 Karl Benz, a German engineer, built the firstever car powered by gasoline (petrol).

It had three wheels and seats for two people. It traveled at thirteen kilometers per hour. The car was built on a frame made of steel tubes and had a steering lever.

In 1771 Nicolas Cugnot produced what was probably the first self powered vehicle driven by steam.

An Englishman, Richard Trevithick ran a steam car along a road in Cornwall, reaching at least 14 kilometers per hour.
Maybe you heard Henry Ford was but Carl Benz generally is acknowledged as the inventor of the modern automobile.

The gasoline engine is attributed to Nicolaus Otto who produced spark-ignited gas (i.e. gaseous fuel, not petrol) engines at his workd in Cologne, Germany.
Gottlieb Daimler invented what is recognized as the of the modern gasoline engines in1885. It had a a vertical cylinder, and had gasoline injected through a carburetor (patented in 1887). Daimler also built a two-wheeled vehicle called the "Reitwagen" (Riding Carriage) with this engine and a year later built the world's first four-wheeled motor vehicle.

The worlds first practical automobile was invented and built by Karl Benz in Germany 1886. It was a 3 wheeled single cylinder powered vehicle he called the Benz Patent-Motorwagen.
