They came into general usage in the l920"s. The candlestick type seen in Gangster movies was most popular with the dial at the base, and separate mike and receiver.The Hamel family had Phones (we lived then in Bayonne) since l927.

Almon B. Strowger patented the basic design for an automatic telephone switching system in 1891. The dial was developed a few years later during enhancements to the automatic system. The earliest phones used with the automatic systems used a pushbutton that the caller had to push rapidly the number of times that corresponded to each digit of the number being called. The standard rotary dial was further developed and enhanced by the Automatic Electric Co. of Chicago, Ill. in the early part of the 20th Century.

The year 1919 was when the Bell System finally adopted automatic switching, which they had resisted implementing up to that time. Many independent telephone companies (non-Bell) had already been using automatic switching and dial telephones for nearly two decades by 1919.
