The first tank was built by the British, the so-called "Little Willie" prototype. It was armed with a Vickers 2-pounder gun and 6 Madsen machine guns. The first production series was the Mk. 1, which is the familiar parallelogram-shaped tank from the war.

The French followed with a couple of their own tanks, including the Schneider CA1 and the Renault FT. 17. Germany built only 20 A7F tanks.

The French were developing Tanks at the same time as the British, quite independently. They were only a couple of weeks behind the British in beginning to manufacture Tanks, and some argue that, depending which date you select, they were level or even ahead in terms of trials and experimentation. Since neither country knew of the other's activities, the fairest answer is: Britain and France.

The first British prototype was the No.1 Lincoln Machine, which later became "Little Willie." It was intended to arm Little Wille with a 2-pdr and Madsens, but this was never carried out.

The Renault, which was built in larger numbers than any other tank in WWI, was the FT, not FT17. The German Tank was the A7V.
