Who first invented the toothbrush?

The identity of the person who first invented the toothbrush is not known. Various forms of tooth cleaning have been used for thousands of years. The Chinese have used the bristle toothbrush since 1498, during the reign of the Hongzhi Emperor (r. 1487--1505) of the Ming Dynasty. The idea is thought to have been brought to Europe by Europeans who had traveled to China. The earliest identified use of the word "toothbrush" in English was in the autobiography of Anthony Wood, who wrote in 1690 that he had bought a toothbrush from J. Barret. Mass production of the toothbrush began in 1780 when they were sold by a William Addis of Clerkenwald, England. The modern toothbrush uses nylon fibers instead of pig, boar or badger bristles, and was introduced in 1938 by the DuPont Company.
