No one knows who first invented the violin. Some people think that when Arabs escaped the Turkish fundamentalist reaction in about 1175 AD, they brought the rebab or "spiked fiddle" with them. That instrument was unfretted and played with a bow. To make the sound appeal to western ears, they added a fourth string.
The instrument was perfected by Andrea Amati in about 1580.
